Some people need to breathe. I need to read. This obsession of mine is not exactly a secret so consequently I’m often asked to name a few favorite books. Flying my homemade sheet metal dustpan to the moon would be an easier task.
So today, instead of a book list, which would stretch to the moon, I chose to list a few of my favorite marketing authors.
Seth Godin - Seth is always tuned into what is working in the world of marketing today. All of his books are marketing-based and worth reading. I don’t have a favorite Seth book but I love Purple Cow’s relevance to a contractor building her business. Make your service so remarkable that people talk about it.
Harry Beckwith - Harry’s books contain a series of short essays that relate marketing and understudies like advertising and branding, to real life, commonsensical situations.
Roy Williams - The Wizard of Ads Trilogy. Available here for a free download. Roy works to improve our communications. If you enjoy clear and coherent marketing rhetoric, you’ll enjoy his books.
Marty Neumeier - Most of Marty’s books make great airplane reads. I love how Marty relates design to business building and he is my go-to source for all things branding.
Bernadette Jiwa - Often referred to as the female Seth Godin of our times, Bernadette is all about storytelling. Experts suggest using storytelling in your marketing. Bernadette shows us how. She has an uncommon ability to distill a point to its essence and the short essays in her books reflect it.
Joe Pulizzi - As a former Penton Publishing employee, Joe knows our industries. He is often referred to as the godfather of content marketing. He’s the founder of the Content Marketing Institute and his books cover all aspects of content marketing.
Ann Handley - In addition to content marketing, Ann’s book Everybody Writes teaches us 21st century communications and writing. Ann is the Chief Content Officer of MarketingProfs, an ultra uptodate, all things marketing company.
David Meerman Scott - When content marketing experts look for a quote or someone to write the foreward for their content marketing book, David is the guy they turn to.
John Jantsch - Well known in our industries for his Duct Tape Marketing book, John is a veritable marketing machine.
Dan Antonelli - Dan delivers branding and logo design right to the contractor’s front door. If you have the slightest interest in branding and you’re contractor, Building a Big Small Business Brand is a must have.

As far as writing, the book that has made the greatest impact on my life is Writing the Natural Way by Gabriele Lusser Rico. Not only is Rico’s treatment on clustering one of the most powerful writing tools around, it’s an outstanding thinking tool.
Here is a list of book recommendations from a well respected industry author who is a permanent resident in Contracting Business’s Hall of Fame.
Speaking of Matt Michel, his book The Power of Positive Pricing has a stratospheric return on investment,
packs more value and bang for the buck than any book that I am aware of. This is one of those rare books that if it cost $100.00 it’d be a bargain. Good thing for us it costs significantly less.
